Above a Collier's cartoon by Kate Osann. The character's name is Tizzy, and it became a syndicated feature with NEA, after Collier's folded in 1957.
Here are a few more SATURDAY EVENING POST (and a few COLLIER'S) cartoons from the 1950s.
Above: the one and only Bil Keane drawing a very familiar family situation (albeit circle-less). But, that said, how many non-cartoonist families have quart size bottle of ink sitting on tables, now?
You can see some of these cartoons have slight damage to them. This is a well loved scrapbook!
Above: a gag cartoon by Brad MARMADUKE Anderson.
Harry Mace was a journeyman cartoonist; magazine cartoonist, syndicated cartoonist -- and a master of clean line 1950s style humor.
J. Kiernan (like Bob Barnes below) draws chaos very well. Interestingly, Kiernan chooses to show the kids in action, while Barnes just shows the physical after effects.
Betty Swords was a prolific panel cartoonist.
So much of the world that Charles Cartwright draws above is gone: mom's little sewing case, dad's floor ashtray and little boys wearing any hat that isn't a baseball cap.
I still see Vahan Shirvanian's cartoons in Reader's Digest.
It's the snotty triumphant smile on the kid that made me laugh at Jerry Marcus' cartoon.
Jerry Marcus has some of the best gags. Look at that line: one word. Succinct and it assumes you "get" the set up line.
Bob Barnes is able to compose the after effects of chaos so well. The question pretty much begs for an Al Jaffee set of Snappy Answers.
Kaz specialized in medical-related gags.
Bill Harrison's clean line style gets a lot of illusion of depth in this nice, rather mean kinda cartoon. And it's true, too. True then, and now -- and that makes it funny.
A big thank you to Kristin Cawood for giving me this large scrapbook of 1950s gag cartoons to share! Thanks, Kristin!
